Your care begins with a conversation

We will explain what your tooth needs, review your options, and help you understand whether a same-day crown is appropriate for you.

Same-day treatment is available for suitable cases. An assessment, additional treatment, or follow-up appointments may be required.

What is a dental crown?

A dental crown is a custom-made covering that fits over a prepared tooth. It helps restore the tooth’s shape and function while providing support for tooth structure that has been weakened or damaged.

Your dentist may recommend a crown for a broken tooth, a tooth with a large filling and limited remaining structure, or a tooth that needs protection following root canal treatment.

A crown is not the only option for every damaged tooth. We will discuss whether a filling, a partial restoration, or another treatment would be appropriate for your situation.

What makes same-day crowns different?

With a conventional laboratory-made crown, treatment commonly involves separate preparation and placement appointments, with a temporary crown protecting the tooth between visits. A same-day approach brings crown production into the dental office, allowing suitable cases to be completed without that waiting period.

For patients who are suitable for this approach, the benefits can include:

Fewer treatment visits

Crown preparation and placement can take place in the same appointment.

No temporary crown between those stages

When treatment is completed that day, there is no need to wear a temporary crown while waiting for a laboratory.

Digital impressions

A digital scan captures the information used to design your crown, rather than relying on a conventional impression tray for that step.

01

Assessment and tooth preparation

We begin by assessing your tooth and discussing the recommended treatment. Once the plan is agreed upon, your dentist prepares the tooth to make room for the crown, using local anaesthetic as appropriate for your comfort.

02

Digital scanning and design

A digital scan creates a three-dimensional view of the treatment area. This information helps us design a crown tailored to your tooth and surrounding teeth.

03

Made here in our office

Our CEREC Primemill shapes the crown from a dental restorative material selected for your needs. Our CEREC SpeedFire furnace provides the required heat-processing and finishing stages for compatible materials. These systems allow us to make and finish suitable crowns in the office.

04

Fit, adjustments, and placement

Your dentist checks the crown’s fit, appearance, and how your teeth meet before securing it in place. We will also explain how to care for your restored tooth.

Is a same-day crown right for everyone?

Not every tooth or treatment plan is suitable for same-day completion. Some teeth need additional care first, such as root canal or gum treatment, and some crowns require a different material or fabrication approach.

We will recommend an approach based on your dental needs—not simply how quickly a crown can be made.

Frequently asked questions about same-day crowns

Content from the Pickering Square Dental team. Last updated: October 2, 2026.

This page is general information about same-day crowns and is not a diagnosis, treatment plan, or medical advice. Whether same-day treatment suits your tooth, how long your appointment takes, and any follow-up care are decided for your own tooth after an examination.

Is a same-day crown my final crown, or a temporary one?

When same-day treatment is completed, the crown placed is your final restoration—not a temporary covering while you wait for another crown. It is intended for ongoing use, although no crown is guaranteed to last a lifetime.

How much time should I set aside?

The time needed depends on your treatment plan and the work involved. Making the crown is only one part of the visit; preparation, scanning, finishing, and fitting also take time. Our team will explain the expected appointment length when scheduling your treatment.

How do I care for my crown?

Continue brushing and flossing daily, avoid chewing hard objects such as ice or pens, and follow your dentist’s care recommendations. Crowns can provide many years of service, but their lifespan varies and they may eventually need repair or replacement.

What will treatment cost, and will my insurance help?

We will provide a treatment estimate and explain the recommended care before you proceed. Dental benefits vary by plan, so coverage should be checked in advance. Our team can help you submit an estimate to your benefits provider and understand the response.
