Preventions and treatment of Periodontal Disease:

Periodontal disease is an infectious and inflammatory disease which destroys the periodontal tissues. These tissues consist of the gums and the bone that support the teeth. It is a gum and bone disease that houses the bacteria that can infect the gums, bone and supporting structure of the teeth.

Periodontal disease affects 3 out of 4 adults. It is caused by a growing colony of living bacteria called “plaque”. The greatest cause of adult tooth loss is periodontal disease.

The symptoms of gum disease are not usually obvious until the disease has progressed to an advanced stage. Because it is often a painless and silent disease, many adults – some estimates suggest more than 75% – have this disease and are unaware of it.

In addition to possible tooth loss, recent studies by medical experts have linked periodontal disease to heart disease, diabetes and other life-threatening aliments.

Once it is detected, periodontal disease can be treated. If it is detected in its early stages it can often be reversed.

Signs of Periodontal Disease:

If you have early-stage gum disease you will experience virtually no symptoms.

In its later stages, symptoms of the disease include:
– red, swollen gums
– persistent bad breath
– bleeding during brushing or flossing
– loose teeth

Prevention and Treatment of Periodontal Disease:

The best way to avoid gum disease is to have regular dental checkups and cleanings. At each visit with us, we will check the condition of your gums. We will also do a thorough scaling (removal) of the tartar that houses the bacteria that can infect the gums.

Based on individual needs, often a soft tissue management program may be initiated which can help minimize further deterioration.

If we detect signs of gum disease, we can offer a number of treatments, depending on the progression of the infection. We offer the latest in laser procedures to provide fast, minimally invasive treatment of gum disease.

If you are concerned about the health of your gums, contact us today to schedule a full dental examination or consultation with our on staff periodontist Doctor Shoval at Pickering Square Dental.
