5 Possible Causes of Gum Bleeding

When you notice traces of blood in your saliva after brushing or flossing, it can be a disconcerting experience. But there could be a perfectly harmless reason for gum bleeding. It’s important to do your research, however, and make sure a more serious medical or dental concern is not behind your bleeding issue. Within this blog, we’ll outline five possible causes of gum bleeding.

1. Poor Hygiene

Have you been skipping occasionally skipping brushing and flossing a minimum of twice daily? This could be the reason that your gums are inflamed and bleeding.  Poor oral hygiene habits can cause the build-up of plaque and tartar on the gums. This, in turn, can cause the gums to bleed at even the slightest contact from the brush.  If not addressed it could lead to more serious oral health issues!

2. Vitamin C Deficiency.

Vitamin C deficiency occurs when you don’t have enough fruit and vegetables in your diet. It’s a problem that can lead to swollen gums that bleed more easily. By simply going to your doctor and explaining your symptoms you can be tested for vitamin deficiency.

3. Hormonal Changes

For women going through puberty or pregnancy, bleeding gums is a common occurrence. This is due to the hormonal changes taking place in your body, which can often be mitigated by a dental professional.

4. A Medication Side-Effect

Many of the leading medications for epilepsy and cancer are known to cause gum bleeding. This is a problem that many patients experience while battling their condition and can often be reduced through concerted steps taken by both the doctor and the dentist. Certain over-the-counter medications such as aspirin can also cause some gum bleeding, but this is quite rare among the general population.

5. A Smoking Side-Effect

For smokers, gum bleeding can be a side-effect of their habit. That’s because tobacco smoke contain numerous chemicals that can affect our body’s ability to fight against bacterial plaque. This means that, by giving up smoking, you can not only improve your general health but also your oral health for the long-term.

Gum bleeding issues can be treated if you know the cause. Speak with our team, and don’t wait until it’s too late to report gum bleeding… get to the root of the problem!

A Guide to Protecting Children’s Teeth over the Holiday Season

It’s the time that children wait patiently for each year. The beginning of the holiday season brings with it joy and happiness and lasting memories of time spent with family and friends. But, for those with children, it’s the ideal time in which to enforce dietary discipline and protect children’s teeth for the years ahead. Here, we’ll offer our quick guide to protecting children’s teeth during the holiday season.

Teach Children to Clean Teeth One Hour after Eating Candy and Desserts

The majority of the damage caused to children’s teeth during the holiday season takes place after eating sugary treats. Candy and dessert are among the leading causes of cavities. And during the holidays, children tend to consume far more of these sugary delights than they do throughout the year.

This makes the holidays the ideal point to introduce children to the importance of cleaning teeth one hour after eating. This timing will give the child’s natural saliva the opportunity to bring the acid level of the sugary content down and prevent rubbing acidic elements further into the tooth. It will also ensure that any substances from the candy or dessert are removed before they affect oral health.

Create a Daily Cleaning Schedule

It’s exceptionally important that children understand the importance of daily teeth cleaning, especially during the busy holiday season when they might be visiting with other family members and not following their normal routine. With the excitement of the holidays, it can be easy for children to get off-track.

Adults can help children by creating a day-to-day cleaning schedule for their teeth. Schedules should be placed in the bathroom area to ensure they’re easily noticeable. For the first few nights of the schedule, it’s worth considering watching the child as they brush their teeth. This will help ensure they’re following the routine and brushing using an effective cleaning technique.

By creating an effective oral health regimen during the important holiday period, adults can help children begin a commitment to dental health that will protect them in years to come. To learn more on the dental care teaching process, speak with a specialist at Pickering Square Dental directly.

Avoid Tooth and Mouth Injuries For Your Child On The Ice This Winter

If your child plans to take to the ice this winter, you’ll want to make sure that he or she is wearing the proper safety equipment to guard against tooth and mouth injuries. Since the majority of dental injuries involve at least one of the front teeth,  taking steps to avoid tooth and mouth injuries is very important.

Consequences of Not Wearing Proper Facial Safety Equipment

When players do not wear the right type of head and face protection when they step onto the ice, they put themselves at risk for the following types of injuries:

•   Chipped or broken teeth

•   Lost teeth
Learn more about family dentistry services in Pickering.

•   Jaw fractures

•   Mouth and tongue lacerations

Avoid Tooth and Mouth Injuries on Ice with the Right Equipment

The first piece of safety equipment all hockey players should don before stepping out onto the ice is a well-fitting helmet. When shopping for one, make sure that it it certified by either the Canadian Standards Association or the Hockey Equipment Certification Council. Once you bring the helmet home, make a point of inspecting it regularly to ensure that the hardware and screws are secure.

The other piece of equipment required to help protect your child from tooth and mouth injuries is a mouth guard. This is a piece of plastic that fits inside the mouth and is designed to protect the teeth, tongue, lips, cheeks, and jaw when they are hit by a moving object. There are three main types available:

•   Stock. This type of mouth guard is inexpensive and comes in sizes S, M, and L. Some players find that they are too wide in the back and this style makes it difficult to talk.

•   Boil and Bite. With this style, hot water is used to soften the plastic and the player bites into the guard to create a semi-custom fit. It offers a good level of protection.

•   Custom. For the best protection against tooth and mouth injuries, see a dentist for a custom mouth guard. It is the most expensive type, but the money is worth it if your child plays sports throughout the year or if they have braces. Once a child is 13 or 14 years of age, the mouth guard should continue to fit for as long as the child continues to participate in sports.

Always keep safety in mind when going on the ice. Taking short cuts and neglecting to wear a helmet and mouth guard just open the door to a potential injury.

Sports Guards

September is synonymous with back-to-school, a seasonal change to fall and the beginning of a

new sports season.

Sports involvement is fun, teaches kids team spirit and is a great way for them to get some

exercise, but as with any sport, safety comes first and kids, even from an early age, need to

wear a mouth guard to prevent dental and head injuries.

Mouth guards are plastic polymers that are designed to fit over the teeth and act as a shock

absorber. They are mandatory in most sports and leagues. They range from over the counter

(at a local sports store) to custom made at your Dentist’s office. The benefits of a custom

mouth guard are; comfort, feel, better materials as well as perfect adaptation, which aids in the

protection factor.

While hockey, especially for us Canadians, comes to mind as the sport where kids would need

to wear a mouth guard, they are also beneficial in protecting your child’s mouth while playing

many other sports like football, baseball, soccer, lacrosse, karate and basketball. If your child is

engaged in any sport or intense physical activity where they could injure themselves, there’s no

doubt that the best defence for any athlete is a professionally fitted mouth guard.

Wearing a mouth guard can protect your smile, prevent a jaw fracture or concussion, save a

tooth or, even a life.
